Turning down a high-paying job for lower-level role can be good
Turning down a high-paying job for lower-level role can be goodTurning down a high-paying job for lower-level role can be goodHave you ever turned down a high-paying job, and if so, why did you do it?It may sound counter-intuitive, but turning down a senior position for a lower-level role can benefit your career in the long-run.I know this from personal experience. There were promising options in front of me. I could have been recruited into director-level positions at a number of major pharmaceutical companies on my credentials alone. I even watched my peers step into upper management roles. But I decided to go another direction.I could have been recruited into director-level positions at a number of major pharmaceutical companies on my credentials alone. I watched my peers step into upper management roles. There were promising options in front of me, but I decided to go another direction.I stepped backwards. My background at this point was in medicine, and I didnt have any family mem bers or mentors who could guide me in the geschftlicher umgang world. So rather than taking a high-level position at a corporate company, I decided to work in an environment that provided optimal learning opportunities. I accepted a manager role at a small startup- an entry-level position that offered one-third of the salary of the director roles.I learned more during those 18 months I spent in that job than I have in any position since. Most people arent crazy about starting near the bottom of the ladder after getting an advanced degree. I understand its not the route everyone wants to take, but it has some very real benefits.Heres when this trajectory makes senseWhen you dont know the mechanics of the businessIf you enter a company at a senior position, you can miss a lot of the low-level mechanics of how the business actually functions. This is the origin of your eventual limitations- the Peter Principle in the making. Some people may think youre overqualified in an entry-level pos ition. Dont focus on that. Instead, work on being a complete sponge. Learn the startups inner workings better than people at the most senior level. And in doing so, youll set yourself up for success later on.My entry-level role was at a typical lean startup without adequate legal resources, so part of my job was navigating contracts and agreements. When I first looked at one of the agreements, I was shocked. Every word of it was English, but I couldnt understand a single sentence. Id never seen anything like it, and I had no idea what I was doing. But all that time working with legal documents paid off, because today, I can read them nearly at the level of an attorney. Thats extremely helpful, because much of my current role as CEO revolves around managing legal agreements and contracts. If you dont know the basics of a business, get close to the low-level work. Perform under-appreciated, but necessary, tasks. I guarantee it will benefit you in some way later on.When you want a broad scope of workSenior positions typically have narrowly-defined functions. In big pharmaceutical companies, these roles tend to be analysts, sourcers, or negotiators. In a smaller company- like the startup where I began- every position is more generalized. And its the same with entry-level positions at a bigger company. For these roles, you need to perform as an all-around athlete. Rather than being an expert in a particular field, you have to be a quick learner who is adaptable and multi-faceted. That means you naturally get a chance to perform a broad scope of workMy first company didnt have the resources to hire specialists for every task. So I had an opportunity to dip my toe into a number of different areas. I wasnt immediately pigeonholed into a very narrow component of business development. The range of knowledge I learned in that first position is still paying dividends today. When you want to meet your highest potentialTheres a concept in management called the Peter Principle. It states that people in a hierarchy rise to the level of their incompetence. Put simply, a good employee will be promoted based on their past success, no matter the role. Eventually, they reach a level at which they can no longer perform competently because their skills dont necessarily translate from one position to the next.Entry-level and mid-level positions are where you establish the building blocks to thrive in your career. As you move from rung to rung, you broaden your skill set, establish important relationships, and expand your areas of knowledge. When you spend time building your base of knowledge in a measured manner, youre less likely to be thrust into a position where the Peter Principle comes into play.Ive seen many people land narrowly-defined senior positions, where a lot is at stake, simply by getting lucky or having superior interviewing skills. I certainly dont fault them for taking those positions. But I do caution young professionals that a meteoric rise based on a thin layer of expertise is often followed by a similarly rapid fall.Remember, you wont be stuck in an entry or mid-level position forever. By creating a base from which to grow, youre giving yourself an opportunity to continue moving upwards without plateauing - or falling back down - when you find yourself in a difficult role. While accepting a lower-level role isnt the only way to grow, its the route I recommend for maximum career-security, growth, and learning opportunitiesThis article first appeared on Quora.

Richard Branson on flex policies, what Virgin looks for in an employee, and lessons learned
Richard Branson on flex policies, what Virgin looks for in an employee, and lessons learnedRichard Branson on flex policies, what Virgin looks for in an employee, and lessons learnedEntrepreneur Richard Branson gave a keynotenzeichen presentationthis week at the Adobe Summit, a digital marketing conference, in which he made a serious case for why Americans need mora vacation time, what makes an ideal Virgin employee and other career advice. The self-made billionaire mogul and founder of investment and marketing company Virgin Group reportedly has stakes in more than 400 companies in 34 countries across a variety of industries. Here are a few takeaways from his address. On Virgins flexible policiesYou know, we also have some things which I think, that we do at Virgin which most companies dont do, and which I would really recommend they did. So, well give people unlimited paid leave. So somebody wants to go off for a month and travel the world, they can do it. They dont have to ask permi ssion, Branson said. But theyll work that much harder when they get back, and the company has not suffered from introducing this. If somebody wants to work from home, they can. If somebody wants to work from home on Fridays and Mondays, they can - and actually, they get more work done without having all the time of commuting to and from the office by doing that, he added. So, I think treating people with flexibility, treating people as humans, treating people as youd treat yur own children, comes back to the company many times over.On advice he recently gave to someoneBranson mentions that a few nights before the presentation, he met a father at the bar who welches trying to figure out what to do in life. The mogul asked him if he had kids. He said he had two, is married, and part of a very happy family. Branson said he could sense that the man was considering leaving his job and that the man probably thought he would recommend that he go the entrepreneurial route. While Branson said that if the man has a concept that would improve the lives of others, he should pursue it, but he continued, What I actually said to him was Do you enjoy the people you work with at work? And he said yes, he really loved those people. Do you enjoy your work? Yes. But, what I did say to him was Go to your company boss and try and get them to change some of the policies to give you a bit more flexibility so you dont feel restricted to two or three weeks, holidays a year, which I think this American, really-short holiday system is cruel.Branson added Its not a good way of fathers spending time with their children, mothers spending time with their children, and its not good for the business. You know, just because somebodys sitting at the desk all day long does not mean theyre working all day long. People can work in three or four days and most likely can get all their work done. So, more flexibility - they will be much more treu ergeben and they wont be necessarily asking the quest ion, should I leave this company and go do something else? On what Virgin looks forThe most important attribute to a person, whether theyre running other people, or whether theyre being run by other people is to be wonderful at basic things like kindness. Basic things like looking for the best in other people. Basic things like listening all the time, not just hearing yourself speak, Branson said. So, if you are in a position of power in a company, and somebody says, You know, theres a problem at home or something, immediately tell them, Take a couple of weeks off, you know, go sort it out and get your priorities and life right. So, thats the kind of people we look for, he added. On the importance of attention to detail and listeningAfter mentioning the ways Virgin changed the airline industry, Branson explained what he does to continue moving forward. When making experiences, attention to detail matters. To this day, I keep a notebook in my pocket whenever I board a flight. I get out and I listen to passengers, I listen to cabin staff, and I write these thoughts and experiences down, and then action them the next day because these thoughts and experiences are invaluable, and they help us keep air travel fun, friendly and entertaining, Branson said.Frequently taking note of these seemingly little things has become one of the keys to our success. As expectations change, experiences must evolve too. So, as a leader, or really, whatever you were doing in life, always be a good listener, he advised. Always strive to create a different and better experience than anyone else. Never rest on your laurels. We try to live on these principles in every single business we run in our airlines, in our hotels, in our trains, in our gyms, and so on.On what you can learn from lifes experiencesWhat holds true in business and advocacy, has also been true in my personal life. And I think the most important lessons Ive learned that havent come from the books Ive read, that havent come from the formulas Ive memorized, that havent come what I call No. They have come from what I call the school of life. And the school of life is definitely the best experience there is, Branson said.

How to deal with your significant other losing their job
How to deal with your significant other losing their jobHow to deal with your significant other losing their jobWhen my husband lost his supposedly stable job (just a casual two months before our wedding), we went through one of the roughest patches of our relationship - fruchtwein of it being my fault.I still remember him calling to say the job was done. It was minutes after learning I needed extensive dental work and I was on his insurance. Cue the sweat, anxiety, questions, and lots and lots of tears. How will we pay for the remainder of the wedding? Will he ever get a job again? Where will we live? Will I need to pick up another job? Will my teeth fall out if I dont get this dentist work done?Spoiler alert He got a job two months later, we still got married, we never became homeless, and I still have my teeth. But lets just say I learned a few things throughout the process, and if I had to go through it again, Id do things VERY differently. If youre currently going through it (se nding a hug and a big glass of vino), or do in your future, act better than I did. Heres how.Be supportiveIf theres any time to put yourself in someone elses shoes, its when theyve been let go from a job. So much of our identity is wrapped up in our careers and money, and most of us have a strong urge to contribute to our family - which, after losing a job, feels impossible. But stuff happens Especially as a partner, its crucial to remember that your partner is human, too. Theyre already feeling down on themselves and likely embarrassed. Just like two athletes on a team, you must be able to pick your teammate up when theyve had a shitty game or dont make the basket (or you know, something similar but less sporty).Batch your adviceIm gonna go out on a limb and say that most women reading this have been accused of nagging. Guilty as charged But Ill let you in on a brilliant piece of advice I got from a friend during this jobless period Batch your advice into rare occasions. If you find a job posting that seems amazing and want your S.O. to check it out, simply save the link on your phone. Resist texting them every single job you come across. Even though it might not feel like nagging to you, it likely does to them (and it is). And you know what, theyre likely already looking at that same job - so youre overkill at this point.Instead, once a week, send an email to your loved one with jobs people have sent you or any leads you might personally have. Then, do your best to let them decide which jobs they apply to (imagine that).Same with talking about it. Learn from my mistake and DO NOT ask for an update every single night over dinner. Reminder Youre not their mom, youre their partner. Not only is that more nagging overkill, but its also bad for your relationship. Your S.O. is an adult, and likely pretty capable - theyll find something. Let them tell you when theyve applied to a gig (if they want), and continue talking about other things that you did before the lo ss.Treat themYes, you read that rightInstead of being resentful and reminding your S.O. that they arent contributing financially, cut them some slack. Think about how youd want to be treated. Even when bills are tight (been there), think of a way to treat your significant other and raise their spirits.Maybe its a massage (by you OR a trained professional), a beer at the local brewery, or even a little picnic in the park. Dont spend money if you dont have it, but get creative in showing your partner that youre there for them. Job or no job, they still (likely) deserve a little love. It might be the supportive boost they needed right before a big vorstellungsgesprch, tooPlan around your budgetIf youll be the bread winner, or if neither of you will be working, its obviously important to budget. Even if your S.O. gets a job again soon, youll have a few weeks/months of limited income. Take that income, plus any crucial bills, and do some math - together - so that youre both on the same page.Since you dont know how long this strict budget will last, save money on weekly bills like grocery shopping, and think about cutting costs like Netflix and your gym membership. You might even realize that you dont need a lot of the auto-pilot services youd been paying for - even after a job is foundIf money is really tight, as it was for us with the wedding approaching, consider moving back in with a set of parents for the time being. We did it (and survived). Our San Francisco rent was something we didnt want to be stressing about, especially if it took a while to find a job. So, we packed up and moved in with my parents for a few months. If you have this option, or can bring in a roommate to help cover costs, its one way to reduce major budget stress.Give it timeFinding a job that suits someone well usually doesnt happen overnight. Let your partner find something that makes them happy or is a good fit. I can guarantee that youll feel disappointed after they come home from a n interview saying they didnt like the role after all, but again, put yourself in their shoes. It might take a little while longer, but at the end of the day, you dont want to go through this again soon. Let them find a gig theyll be happy at for a while - instead of forcing them into something because of your stress levels. They can always find a part-time job in the meantime if this is taking longer than youre both comfortable with. This article first appeared on The EveryGirl.

The One Way Youre Sabotaging Your Chances for a New Job
The One Way Youre Sabotaging Your Chances for a New JobThe One Way Youre Sabotaging Your Chances for a New Job Of course there are lots of ways you can sabotage an interview. But were going to assume you know better than to lie on your resume , bash your previous employer , or perhaps worst of all, show up totally unprepared . So lets talk about one thing you might not realize is hurting your chances of landing a new job being inconsistent. Being inconsistent in an interview think, not having a consistent story about your background, experience, the reason youre interested in this company and position, and your motivation for leaving your current one, lists Glassdoor human resources expert Jamie Hitchens- can crush you during the interview process. Thats because the recruiter, hiring manager and interviewers all share notes from their time with you, Hitchens explains, and, so, you should be telling them all the saatkorn thing. In other words, you dont want to t ell one manager youre leaving your current job because youd like more flexible work hours, only to turn around and tell the VP of the company youre saying sayonara because youd like to move up the corporate ladder. Neither answer is wrong, in and of itself, but when those two higher-ups talk, your different answers could inspire confusion, and call into question your honesty.Saying different things to different people isnt the only way you can be inconsistent in an interview. As Sharlyn Lauby, founder of HR Bartender , and author of Essential Meeting Blueprints for Managers , points out, you can be inconsistent on a resume. For example, lets say youve held many titles over your career . Your most recent move wasnt lateral- like going from a customer service representative role at one company to another- but instead, is something that doesnt make a lot of sense on paper- like moving from a marketing director to a social media manager. That kind of inconsistency on your resume, Lauby says, might need some explanation. Same goes for listing skills that dont mesh, or listing some accomplishments but not all . All of these inconsistencies can be a red flag to a potential employer. When youre inconsistent, in any way, it shows a lack of preparation and in turn a lack of interest or commitment to this role, warns Hitchens. It shows a lack of attention to detail, and a potential lack of integrity. After all, she says, if youre telling the hiring manager one thing because you think its what they want to hear and then telling other interviewers something else, the truth likely lies somewhere in the middle.Instead, you need to show a hiring manager three key things with what you write in your resume and what you say- to everyone involved in the hiring process- during your interview trust, communication skills, and decision-making skills, Lauby says. Inconsistency can erode trust, Lauby warns. If a manager gets a different answer every time they speak to you, th ey dont know which response is the right one, and that can impact working relationships. So, always try to give an honest answer. When it comes to communication skills, consistency doesnt mean that a persons response will follow a set of norms, Lauby explains. It means that the candidates responses are explainable and dont contradict other answers. In an interview, try to make sure what you say on paper and out loud follows the same story, always. Lastly, inconsistency wont let you show off your decision-making skills - a trait employers value in employees. Companies want to know employees are going to make the consistent decisions when it comes to customer service, Lauby says. Being inconsistent can send the message that those skills are not well defined.
